Citation Cleanup and Management

Citation cleanup is the process of auditing your business information across directories and fixing any inconsistencies. It's one of the most impactful things you can do to improve your AI visibility.

Why citation cleanup matters

Inconsistent citations confuse AI systems. When your business information varies across directories, AI systems become uncertain about your identity and are less likely to recommend you.

Example of inconsistent citations:

Google Business Profile: ABC Plumbing, 123 Main Street, Charlotte, NC 28202, (704) 555-1234
Yelp: ABC Plumbing Services, 123 Main St, Charlotte, NC 28202, 704-555-1234
Apple Maps: ABC Plumbing, 123 Main Street, Charlotte, North Carolina 28202, (704) 555-1234
Website: ABC Plumbing, 123 Main Street, Charlotte, NC 28202, (704) 555-1234

AI systems see four different versions of your business name and address. This inconsistency signals that your business identity is unclear.

The citation cleanup process

Step 1: Audit your current citations

First, find all the places where your business is listed.

How to find your citations:

  1. Search for your business name on Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, and industry directories.
  2. Search for your phone number to find listings you may not know about.
  3. Search for your address to find listings associated with your location.
  4. Check industry directories specific to your business type.
  5. Use citation tracking software (Moz Local, Bright Local, Semrush Local) to find all citations.

Create a spreadsheet with all the citations you find:

Step 2: Establish your standard NAP

Decide on the exact format for your Name, Address, and Phone that you'll use everywhere.

Standard NAP example:

Name: ABC Plumbing
Address: 123 Main Street, Charlotte, NC 28202
Phone: (704) 555-1234

Formatting rules:

  • Name: Use your official business name (no abbreviations or variations)
  • Address: Use the full street name (not "St" or "Ave"), full state name or abbreviation, and full zip code
  • Phone: Use consistent formatting (with or without parentheses, but be consistent)

Step 3: Fix your website first

Your website is your source of truth. Make sure your NAP is correct and consistent everywhere.

Where to add your NAP on your website:

  1. Header: Add your phone number in the top navigation
  2. Footer: Add your full NAP (name, address, phone)
  3. Contact page: Add your full NAP and a contact form
  4. Service pages: Add your service area and phone number
  5. Schema markup: Add LocalBusiness schema with your NAP

Example footer:

ABC Plumbing
123 Main Street, Charlotte, NC 28202
(704) 555-1234
Available 24/7

Step 4: Fix Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is the most important source for AI systems.

How to update Google Business Profile:

  1. Go to Google Business Profile (business.google.com)
  2. Click on your business
  3. Click "Edit" next to each field
  4. Update to match your standard NAP
  5. Save changes

Fields to update:

  • Business name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Website URL
  • Business hours
  • Service area
  • Categories
  • Description

Step 5: Fix major directories

Update Yelp, Apple Maps, and industry-specific directories.

Yelp:

  1. Go to your Yelp business page
  2. Click "Claim this business" if you haven't already
  3. Update your name, address, phone, and website
  4. Save changes

Apple Maps:

  1. Go to Apple Maps
  2. Search for your business
  3. Click "Claim this business"
  4. Update your information
  5. Save changes

Industry directories:

  1. Search for your business on each directory
  2. Claim your profile
  3. Update your information
  4. Save changes

Step 6: Monitor and maintain

Once you've fixed your citations, monitor them regularly.

Monthly maintenance:

  1. Check Google Business Profile for any changes
  2. Check Yelp for any changes
  3. Check Apple Maps for any changes
  4. Check industry directories for any changes
  5. Fix any errors immediately

Use citation tracking software to automate monitoring:

  • Moz Local

  • Semrush Local
  • Yext

These tools will alert you when your information changes or when new citations appear.
